In de Chirico's 'Composizione Metafisica' things are not where they ought but rather where they choose to be: such as an oversize ball and red glove nailed garishly to the wall that make the viewer feel diminutive in front of the inexplicable. The air is still, silent from lack of movement, everything held in an eerie suspense. Invisible watches tell the time here, an antique and futuristic time, and without clearly designated temporal coordinates there can only be questions without answers. Perhaps even the questions are being put on pause. The viewer becomes aware that the painting is more about 'you' the observer, just one among many strange enigmatic objects, than the artist's own invented metaphysical landscape..
